n-Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane Description

n-Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane(CAS 16415-12-6) is a monomeric long-chain alkyl-functional silane, which itself is a colorless, clear liquid that is soluble in common non-polar organic solvents (e.g., petroleum ether, toluene). However, the low volatility and low viscosity of CAS 16415-12-6 silane make it an easy additive to handle. A certain amount of methanol (VOC) is released upon hydrolysis.

Areas of Application
  • Used to improve the miscibility of inorganic materials (e.g., glass, silica, alumina, porcelain, mica, silicon carbide, talc, etc.) with organic materials to improve water resistance.
  • Used for surface modification of ultrafine powders, such as chromatographic columns or stationary phase surface treatment of separation materials.
  • Used to improve the anti-fogging performance of glass.
  • Used to protect historical artifacts or other products from water.

n-Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane: Guide

n-Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane can be used to treat mineral fillers and pigments or general inorganic surfaces (e.g. concrete, ATH, MDH). When CAS 16415-12-6 silane-treated fillers are incorporated into polymers (e.g. polypropylene), the long-chain alkyl functional group produces unique compound properties (better dispersibility, high filler loading, enhanced mechanical properties, reduced water absorption).

Due to its unique structure, Hexadecyltrimethoxysilane exhibits excellent hydrophobicity on the substrate and forms a weather and moisture resistant bond with the substrate.
